I think I might have accidentally stumbled upon the secret to kicking ass at cardio - 20 minute intervals. Usually I just go for the full 60 minutes and increase/decrease my incline as I go, but today I was a big moron and forgot my water, so I worked for 3 20 minute sessions so I could take a break and get some water from the fountain. And I think looking forward to that break drove me to work harder for each 10 minute set.
Usually I walk at anywhere between a 2.2 and 2.5 (sometimes faster, rarely slower) and vary my incline between 5.0 and 12.0. I usually end up doing 6-7 minutes at the high incline and 3-4 minutes on the lower incline, but with the 20 minute bursts, I did 9 and 1. So yay for me. I think I'm going to try this for a while and see if it actually works or if I just had more energy than normal today. AAAAND I wasn't so tired that I did a super crappy arms workout, so I'm proud of myself.
I also found out why the gym's been ridiculously busy - I was talking with the trainer and mentioned that it seemed extra busy all of a sudden. I hinted at the fact that it was ridiculous how many people were there and I was surprised that the New Years resolutioners were still coming and he told me that there's a local gym that's closing so Planet Fitness is offering everyone from that gym free trial memberships. And then he said the amount of people is probably going to start trickling off soon. Haha. Glad to know I'm not the only one who's tired of a packed gym every day that sometimes prevents people who are there to seriously work from working as hard as they can because there are people milling about and waiting for machines so they can do five reps in two sets of 10 pound weights. Ergh.
At least most of the overly makeuped, designer clothed, perfectly coiffed teenagers/young women have stopped coming. Thank God. If you're going to come to the gym, come to sweat, not for a frickin' fashion show.
go you! on biggest loser they always do circuts and like running in intervals...so maybe it really does work!! And yay for the overly done up people going back to sitting on the couch lol
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm thinking. Everything I've heard/read says that pushing as hard as you can for, say, 10 minutes and then resting and repeating 6 times is better than just doing the same thing for an hour, so we'll see if this is enough to break my plateau. I so hope so!
