Weights v. Cardio - Which is Better?

I wish I knew. I wish I knew someone who knew for sure.

I'm not sure if Planet Fitness is running some kind of special or what's going on, but the gym was PACKED today. I always do cardio first because I hate it and would rather get it out of the way, but there were NO cardio machines available when I got to the gym besides ellipticals, which bother the hell out of my knee. So I skipped cardio and went straight to weights.

Today was my lower body day. I switch between upper body and lower body every day and always do core, which usually results in an hour of weights after my hour of cardio. Based on calculators I've found online and the MyFitnessPal app on my phone, I'm estimating that I burn around 450 calories for each hour I spend lifting weights. However, I have NO idea how much muscle I'm building vs how many calories I'm actually burning (during the activity of weightlifting or by building muscle and thereby burning more calories all the time) and I have a feeling that the "just weights" approach I'm finding myself wanting to take more and more is only going to become a problem in the long run by not allowing the weight to come off as it would if I was just doing cardio.

I'm not sure. This is a long and convoluted entry, but I'm overtired and frustrated that I didn't get a cardio workout in. For someone who was going to start kicking ass again, I sure dropped the ball on that today... But at least I didn't binge eat.

  1. Hey, not binging is a huge step. Honestly, the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn. So it's not like you totally dropped the ball...but you're def not gonna lose it as fast w/o the cardio. Although you can still do plenty of cardio w/o machines. I'm sure they have the yoga balls and mats. Do planks, wall squats, use the step they have u can build and do steps, do burpees...it's all cardio :D But stay positive!

  2. Honestly I just really hate sweating... LOL. So I always try to work out on the machines closest to the huge ceiling fan because the cooler I am, the harder and longer I can work out. And if there isn't one where I can get a breeze, I'm totally loathe to even try.

Due to the sheer number of people in the gym lately, it's been extra hot and humid (because of the sweat? Nasty but true) and that totally kills my motivation too...

So basically I want people to stop coming because they're usually not really working out most of the time anyways and they're just gonna give up in a month anyways :/ I want my regulars and my normal machines back, dammit! Totally bitchy, but totally true.

  3. since murder is not an option (unfortunately lol) maybe you could go at less peak hours of the day? Then at least till people start quitting again you could get your machines haha. But just think, the more you sweat (even tho its gross) the more weight you're losing! It's fat just melting off! So enjoy the heat and the sweat cause it means what you're doing is working :D

  4. I've thought about that... But I work a normal 8-5 job just like everyone else, so I'd either have to get up early and go before work (NOT an option) or go around 8... And while that might normally work, I know myself and I'd sit around at home and fall asleep or get too lazy and not want to go. If I go right after work, I get home, let the dog out, change, and go all in 10 minutes. I'm a lazy individual so I need as much help as I can get. Haha.

And I'm just gonna have to remember that about sweating. It feels so gross though... LOL.
